SUMMARY:County Museum: “FORGOTTEN PATRIOTS” Virginia’s Black Soldiers of the American Revolution 1775-1783
DESCRIPTION:From the beginning of the American Revolution in 1775\, hundreds if not thousands of “men of color” mustered with their county militias and several hundred of these men chose to enlist in Continental Army regiments. They were involved in almost every major battle in the conflict\, including being at the Siege of Yorktown\, VA in 1781. They were a portion of the victory that birthed our nation. Sometimes forgotten or overlooked\, these men did serve side by side with other White Virginians and both swore U.S. Pension depositions for each other well after the war was over. They were our founders\, too. This program will illuminate who they were and what their contributions were in our independence from England. The speaker will be John Pagano\, Chesterfield Historic Sites Interpretation Supervisor. \nFree to the public\, though please register via the Parks and Recreation Webpage linked here \n11 am at Chesterfield County Musuem \n6813 Mimms Loop\, Chesterfield

SUMMARY:County Museum: Nature’s Civil War: Common Soldiers and the Environment in 1862 Virginia
DESCRIPTION:In 1862 Virginia\, Civil War soldiers endured punishing environmental conditions\, which increased disease and harmed morale. In response to their natural enemies\, they forged informal networks of health care and adopted self-care habits\, from boiling water\, to eradicating insects\, to constructing elaborate shelters. As they fought to regain their health\, they frequently straggled\, testing the limits of army discipline. Through these trials\, Civil War soldiers proved remarkably resilient. The speaker will be Dr K.T. Shively\, Associate Professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University \nFree to the public\, though please register via the Parks and Recreation Webpage linked here \n11 am at Chesterfield County Museum \n6813 Mimms Loop\, Chesterfield

SUMMARY:1976-2026: The Museum\, 50 Years of Collecting and Preserving Chesterfield History
DESCRIPTION:In 1976\, counties throughout the U.S. chose a special “Bicentennial Project” to mark the nation’s anniversary.  Chesterfield residents decided to build a History Museum. This effort was led by members of the Chesterfield Ruritan Clubs who had been collecting historic items for decades. Most items were stored in the attics and basements of County residents\, so the time was right to build a museum of Chesterfield history. The speaker will be Liess van der Linden-Brusse\, Chair\, Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia’s Library Committee. \nSaturday\, June 6th\, 11am-12pm \nFREE\, Please register through the Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Events Page (Link Will Be Here) \nChesterfield County Museum \n6813 Mimms Loop\, \nChesterfield\, VA
